Reset - is it necessary?
When you reset an instrument, all the data you have stored disappears and you will not be able to recover it.
This should be a last resort "fix" after trying all other troubleshooting. If the instrument communicates with the computer, save all stored data first!!
With this in mind, resetting an instrument, while it's an easy way to solve a lot of problems, might not be the best way.
Try removing power from the instrument for a few seconds first. Sometimes this is all it takes to put the instrument back on track.
