Presented to the Oil & Colour Chemists Association, we explore the differences between traditional spot measurement spectrophotometers versus the advantages of new hyperspectral and non-contact devices, with focus on paint applications.
Common problems originating from measurements of non-regular samples can either cause wide variance between the predicted match and visual result, or simply sometimes a sample may not be able to be measured and requires human visual correction.
This talk focuses on how developments in hyperspectral and non-contact colour measurement; when combined with image analysis, enables a wider possibility and improved performance for paint colour matching.
Colour measurement has traditionally utilized spectrophotometers that measure a fixed spot area, this however doesn’t always fit well with how humans perceive colour.
We explore and give examples how difficult to handle samples such as heavily textured, multi-colored or even wet paint samples, can now achieve good agreement between device and human observation.
