Dark Screen Syndrome - 500 Series Instruments

Screen is either completely clear ( white ) or dark ( black ).  Contrast issue.On at least three ocassions tech support staff have encountered instruments that when reset present the owner with an almost black screen. The unit is still working! The 'defaults' which were loaded during the reset have placed a value into the contrast variable that is just not right for this unit. The only field method that we have found to correct the problem is to "count the beeps" !  Below we count beeps to locate the "Contrast" screen and then adjust the contrast variable.

 

If the dark screen is the result of a reset continue with the bulleted list below. Otherwise be certain that the 'Configuration Editor' is active else this procedure will fail.

• Apply Power to the Instrument
• Press the 'x' key to load the "Main Menu".
• Press the 'UP' key 2 times; 1, 2
• Press the 'ENTER' key 1 time; 1
• Press the 'DOWN' key 7 times; 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7
• Press the 'ENTER' key 1 time; 1
• Press the 'ENTER' key again; 1
• VERY SLOWLY, VERY SLOWLY Press the 'ENTER' key over & over again.
  The screen may not seem to do anything at all for two or three clicks. The contrast is getting darker still. At the 7th or 8th or 9th beep, it will suddenly go clear. Continuing with the 'ENTER' key will cause the display to begin to darken. GO VERY SLOWLY! Stop when the contrast is appropriate!

   

• Press the 'DOWN' key two times; 1, 2
  This will highlight the "Save&Exit" option.

   

• Press the 'ENTER' key to save.
• Press the 'x' key to reeturn to the "Main Menu".
